GUM HYPERPLESIA | PERIODONTOLOGY
CAUSES OF GINGIVAL HYPERPLESIA:
- chronic gingivitis
- drug induced
- anticonvulsants (such a phenytoin, Phenobarbital, primidone)
- calcium, channel blockers, such as nifedipine and verapamil)
- immunosuppressant- cyclosporine
- condition may develop oral manifestation of gingival hyperplasia
- pregnancy
- puberty
- vitamin C deficiency
- pyogenic gronuloma
systemic disease may develop oralmanifestations of gingival hyperplasia
- leukemia
- granulomatous disease
- neoplasm
benign neoplasm such as: - fibromas
- papillomas
- giant cell granuloma
malignant neoplasm such as
-carcinoma
-malignant melanoma

SYMPTOM OF GINGIVAL HYPERPLESIA:
- gums are enlarged firm & swollen
- some patient may also bleeding tenderness in the gums
- gums cover the teeth portion
- histological examination gums have increase in number of cells
TREATMENT:
- scaling
- proper oral hygiene is maintained
- antibiotics & antiseptic mouth wash
- discontinuation of drug which induced hyperplasia
- gingivectomy with carbon dioxide or YAG laser
- surgical excision of gingival tissue
