GUM BIOPSY | PERIODONTOLOGY
DEFINATION: Gum biopsy is a surgery in which a small part of gingival tissue is removed for histopathological examination
Procedure:
local anesthetic injection or pain killer is sprayed into the mouth in the area of abnormal gingival tissue then small part of gingival tissue which appears abnormally is removed and examination for problems in histopathology laboratory
during procedure if there is bleeding, blood vessels may be sewed off with laser or electro cauterization
After few days healing is complete
Test is done to determine cause of abnormal gum tissue
1.abnormal result of biopsy• Amyloid
• Oral cancer :-
e. g. 1. Basal cell carcinoma
2. squamous cell carcinoma
• Non cancerous mouth sores
• Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpures (TTP)
COMPLICATION:
- infection of gum
- soreness
- bleeding gum
- soft diet
- antiseptic mouth wash use for weak to ten days.
- avoid or softly brushing the biopsy area for one week
- avoid tobacco and smoking.
- antibiotic for prevention of post operative infection
