DEFINITION: it is a surgical reshaping & recontouring of the gum tissue for more aesthetic, physiological or functional form.
INDICATION:
1.Regionally limited thickening of gingival without presence of pathologically deepened pockets
2.Persistent interdental craters after necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis/periodontitis
3.Preprosthectic surgery- reshapes gingiva in area of laterpontic.
CONTRAINDICATION:
1. Periodontal pocket
2. Generalised thickened fibrous gingival

gingival and periodontal disease often produces deformities in the gingival that interfere with normal food excursion, collections of plaque & food debris, prolong and aggregate disease process.
gingival clefts, craters and interdental papillae affected by gingival and periodontal disease.
gingivoplasty may be done with periodontal knife, scalpel, rotary coarse diamond stone or electrodes. It consists of tapering the gingival margin, creating an escalloped marginal outline, thinning the attached gingival and creating vertical interdental grooves and shaping the interdental papillae to provide sluiceways for the passage of food.
