HALITOSIS | PERIODONTOLOGY
Definition: halitosis is bad, unpleasant, or offensive breath.
CAUSES OF HALITOSIS
- caries
- abscess tooth
- gum disease – gingivitis and gingivostomotitis
- poor dental hygiene
- foreign body in the nostril (usually in the children)
- impacted tooth
- dentures
- drug
- alcoholism
- tobacco smoking
- sinusitis
- throat infection
- Lung infection
- poor diet
- liver disease
Disease may be associated with breath odor
- acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
- acute renal failure
- bowel obstruction
- bronchiectasis
- chronic renal failure
- diabetes
- esophageal cancer
- diabetic ketoacidosis
- lung abscess
- pharyngitis
- periodontal disease
- liver disease
SYMPTOMS: it depends on the types of the causes of halitosis
TREATMENT:
- according to cause of halitosis
PREVENTION:
- brushing & flossing teeth daily
- clean & replace your toothbrush regularly
- avoid bad habit of alcohol
- regular denture cleaning
- visit a dentist at least once every six months for cleaning & examination.
