Scaling | periodontology



DEFINITION: - “Mechanical removal of plaque, calculus and stain from coronal parts of tooth and root surface.
*Most commonly scaling is done in following disease & symptoms*

  1. Gingivitis
  2. Acute Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis
  3. Bleeding gum
  4. Halitosis
  5. Discoloration of teeth
  6. Gum hyperplasis
  7. Gum recession
  8. Periodontitis
  9. Periodontal pocket

DENTAL PLAQUE:-
Dental plaque is mixture of bacteria, minerals and some food left overs. It irritates the gingival cause’s inflammation over time.


DENTAL CALCULUS:-
The bacteria make it stick, the minerals make it hard and the longer plaque is left on teeth, the harder it gets. After 24 hours, some plaque hardens into calculus, otherwise known as tartar.
Removal of plaque and calculus with hand instruments can also be performed on patient without periodontal disease. This treatment also simply known as scaling.
A device may be electric known as an ultrasonic or sonic scaler.

For patient comfort, A local anaesthetic may be used to numb the portion of mouth where scaling worked on.
Scaling are done with hand instruments called scalers and ultrasonic instruments are electric or air powered called ultrasonic scaler
Mostly ultrasonic scalers are used to remove first larger part of plaque and calculus from crown and root surface of teeth, after if necessary hand instrument used to remove remaining plaque and calculus make teeth surface clean and smooth.
Scaling is done in one or two visit.
ORALCARE AFTER SCALING

  1. Do not bite or chew lip, check or tongue while they are numb.
  2. Avoid chewing for 2 hours after this procedure or until numbness has worn off.
  3. Take fruit juice & clean water a day.
  4. Take analgesic if painful condition.
  5. Do not eat hot spicy food and drink hot liquids.
  6. Chlorhexidine mouth wash.
  7. Avoid tobacco & smoking.
  8. Oral antibiotic for prevention of further oral infection
  9. Gently brushing teeth and flossing teeth after each meal.
  10. Use topical application of anti hypersensitivity gel for reduces dentinal hypersensitivity one week or two week.
