HALITOSIS | PERIODONTOLOGY



Definition:  halitosis is bad, unpleasant, or offensive breath.

CAUSES OF HALITOSIS
  1. caries 
  2. abscess tooth
  3. gum disease – gingivitis and gingivostomotitis 
  4. poor dental hygiene
  5. foreign body in the nostril (usually in the children)
  6. impacted tooth
  7. dentures 
  8. drug 
  9. alcoholism
  10. tobacco smoking 
  11. sinusitis
  12. throat infection 
  13.  Lung infection  
  14. poor diet 
  15. liver disease

Disease may be associated with breath odor
  1. acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis 
  2. acute renal failure 
  3. bowel obstruction
  4. bronchiectasis
  5. chronic renal failure
  6. diabetes
  7. esophageal cancer
  8. diabetic ketoacidosis
  9. lung abscess
  10. pharyngitis
  11. periodontal disease
  12. liver disease

SYMPTOMS: it depends on the types of the causes of halitosis
TREATMENT:
  1. according to cause of halitosis 

PREVENTION:
  1. brushing & flossing teeth daily
  2. clean & replace your toothbrush regularly
  3. avoid bad habit of alcohol 
  4. regular denture cleaning
  5. visit a dentist at least once every six months for cleaning & examination.
