DRY MOUTH | periodontology


Dry mouth due to lack of saliva in mouth.It is also called xerostomia.It is not disease, it is not disease, but it is symptom of many other disease and conditions. Mostly dry mouth caused by failure of salivary glands to function properly. 
Severe dry mouth can also leads to increased levels of tooth decay and infections of the mouth such as thrush. It can be due to some systemic disease. 


# Causes of Dry Mouth
  1. A complication of disease & infection
  2. Diabetes
  3. Parkinson’s disease
  4. sjogren’s syndrome
  5. viral infection such as mumps
  6. Hiv infection
  7. High blood pressure
  8. Anemia
  9. Rheumatoid arthritis
  10. A side effect of medicine of analgesic and medicine for depression (allergic can cause dry mouth)
  11. Dry mouth is common side effect of radiation therapy to treat cancers in the head and neck
  12. Dehydration- Any condition that leads to loss of body fluids can cause xerostomia these conditions including fever, vomiting,diarrhea,bloodloss or loss of water through the skin after a burn.
# SYMPTOMS
Dry mouth is a symptom, it is also occurs with other symptoms include
  1. frequently thirst
  2. dry feeling in the throat
  3. dry red, raw tongue
  4. A dry nasal passage
  5. A dry cracked lips
  6. Burning and tingling sensation in the mouth especially on tongue.
  7. sores in mouth or at corners of lip
  8. increase in dental problems such as cavities and periodontal disease.
  9. problems in speaking or difficulty tasting swallowing and chewing.
  10. Difficulties in wearing dentures.

Treatments 
A) Dry mouth treatment will depend on what is cause
  • if dry mouth is caused by medicine, we change medicine or adjust dosage
  • If salivary glands are not working & produce still some saliva, dentist give you medicine that helps gland better work.
  • Artificially saliva to keep mouth wet.
B) Some other things you can do that may help a dry mouth.
  • Drinking water more
  • Sugarless drinks
  • Avoid drinks like tea, coffee & some soda that contain caffeine can dry mouth
  • Don’t use tobacco or alcohol
  • Don’t use spicy or salty foods may cause pain in dry mouth?
  • Sugarless drinks during meals
  • Use humidifier at night
