CROWN | Prosthetic Dentistry



A crown (caps) is a type dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant.

INDICATION
  1. Smile design
  2. Aesthetically 
  3. Endodontically  treated teeth
  4. Surveyed crown
  5. Fractured teeth
  6. Discoloration of teeth
  7. Extensive damage by decay
  8. Fractured in old filling
  9. Correction of contours of teeth
  10. Use as a retainer for FPD
  11. Restoration of badly damaged tooth
  12. Implant supported tooth
CONTRAINDICATION
  1. Patient with active caries
  2. Patient with untreated periodontal disease
TYPES OF CROWN
a) METAL
        1.High nobel alloy - gold
        2.Low nobel alloy- platinum,palladium
        3.Non nobel alloy-Nickel or chromium
b) PFM ( porcelain fused to metal dental crown)
c) All resin dental crown
d) All ceramic or all porcelain dental crown

ADVANTAGE
  1. Minimal tooth structure removal
  2. Healthy environment of gum tissue
  3. Easy to fit the tooth crown
  4. Greater retention and strength
  5. To modify axial tooth contour
  6. High resistance to deformation
Disadvantage
  1. Appearance not natural tooth

Porcelain fused to metal crowns looks like natural teeth and stronger than ceramic

  1. Dark line found at the crown’s edge.
  2. Sometime gum recession
  3. Can be chip or break off
  4. In heavy bite can wear tooth
