Gingivectomy | PERIODONTOLOGY



Definition:
“A gingivectomy is a surgical excision which includes removal of infected and diseased gingival tissue to achieve more aesthetic appearance and functional contour.
INDICATION
  1. Elimination of suprabony pockets if pocket wall is fibrous and firm.
  2. Elimination of gingival enlargements.
  3. Eliminations of suprabony periodontal abscess

When gingival tissue extends too far on the surface of teeth, length of teeth and height of gum is lost and one or more teeth appear short with gingivectomy return gum position more healthy and aesthetic condition.

Contraindication:
1. Need for bone surgery for examination of bone shape and morphological features
2. Bottom of the pocket located apical to mucogingival junction

Gingivectomy:
Gingivectomy is done for common cause of gingival hyperplasia and periodontal pocket.
Pockets have formed between the teeth and gum. Pocket only involving soft tissue it can be removed by gingivectomy.

Preparation:
Scaling is done for removing plaque and calculus from teeth,gaps and gingival line.
The Procedure:
At the time of appointment a local anesthetic is used to numb gums and area surrounding surgical area specially designed angel scalpels is then used to perform required treatment. Time of treatment 15 minutes to 1 hour depends of teeth amount of gum tissue being removed.
We can perform gingivectomy by using Co2 surgical laser,Advantage of this  procedure include lack of hemorrhage, avoid surgical excision, sterilization of surgical area, prompt healing minimum time spent to perform the procedure.
We can also perform gingivectomy by electro surgery.
After procedure is complete. Dentist places special putty over the gum line (periodontal dressing) to protect and facilitate healing complete healing take places few days or weeks after which gums appear healthy.

Oral care after Gingivectomy
  1. A diet consisting of soft foods so prevent damage to gum line.
  2. Antiseptic mouthwash is use for week to ten days.
  3. softly brushing and flossing can be done on teeth surrounding surgical area after periodontal dressing        is removed.
  4. Avoid tobacco & smoking
  5. Antibiotics for prevention of postoperative infection.
