ROOTCANAL THERAPY | endodontic dentistry



Removing pulp is called endodontic treatment but it is often reffered to as root canal treatment or root canal therapy.
In root canal therapy removal of pulp structure subsequent cleaning, shaping and decontamination of the hollows with tiny files and irrigating solution and obturation of the decontaminated canals with an inert filling such as gutta percha and typically a eugenol based cement.

INDICATION
  1. An irreversibly damaged or necrotic pulp.
  2. Severe caries or an injury that creates periapical abscess in the root region.
  3. Fractured teeth
  4. Deep caries 
  5. Severe pain in teeth when eating hot, cold or sweets food
  6. Discolored tooth after traumatic injury of tooth.
  7. Construction of an overdenture to root rejection or hemisection.
CONTRAINDICATION
  1. Teeth with insufficient periodontal support
  2. Teeth with poor prognosis or uncooperative patient
  3. Teeth cannot be made functional nor restored
PROCEDURE
  1. Preoperative radiograph
  2. Local anaesthesia
  3. Preparation of tooth
  4. Isolation of tooth
  5. Access cavity preparation
  6. Determination of working length 
  7. Preparation of the root canal system- cleaning and shaping
  8. Irrigation and medication
  9. Filling of root canal system
  10. Crown preparation

COMPLICATION
  1. Spread of infection-  osteomyelitis, cellulitis.
  2. Localised bone loss
  3. Loss of tooth
